Julian Jaynes (1920–1997) was an American psychologist and theorist best known for his provocative 1976 book, The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. He spent nearly 25 years teaching at Yale and Princeton, and his controversial hypothesis continues to influence philosophy, psychology, and popular culture.
